How Clean Does Your Car Need to Be Before Shipping? Inspection, Access, and Carrier Rules
Prepare a vehicle for transport with visible exterior condition, accessible interior controls, removable items, realistic weather expectations, and pickup photos.
Cleaning before transport is mainly about making the vehicle’s condition visible and the handoff uncomplicated. It is not a promise that the car will remain clean on an open trailer or that every mark can be seen in poor weather.
1. Aim for visible exterior condition
A reasonably clean exterior makes scratches, chips, dents, cracked glass, and wheel damage easier to discuss at pickup. Wash away heavy mud, road film, or snow when practical so the condition report is based on what both people can see.
You do not need cosmetic perfection. The important work is identifying existing marks clearly, taking broad and close photographs, and comparing the record with the vehicle before it is loaded.
2. Keep the interior and controls accessible
The driver may need keys and access to ordinary controls for loading and unloading. Remove clutter from the driver area, secure or remove loose accessories, and make sure you can explain any operational issue that affects moving the vehicle.
Do not leave sensitive documents, valuables, garage controls, toll devices, or loose equipment in the car. If the carrier has special instructions about permitted items or fuel level, follow the written order rather than relying on a general rule.
3. Plan for weather and imperfect inspections
Rain, dust, darkness, and a busy pickup location can make a perfect walkaround impossible. Photograph the vehicle before the appointment in good light when possible, including panels, glass, wheels, odometer, and notable existing damage.
At the handoff, review the condition report and write down visible concerns or an inspection limitation rather than pretending the conditions were ideal. Save the signed document and repeat the inspection at delivery before finalizing it.
4. Use a short pickup-ready checklist
A clean handoff starts before the truck arrives. Confirm the vehicle’s running condition and keys, clear the interior, and keep your photos and transport documents available on your phone or in a separate folder.
Ask the driver or dispatch team about any vehicle-specific preparation question before pickup. That direct confirmation is more dependable than assuming a carrier’s rules match another shipment.
