Shipping an Electric Vehicle: Requirements, Hidden Fees, and Liability Gaps
Electric vehicle transport requires charge-level prep, carrier-specific handling, and different insurance considerations. What to know before shipping your EV.
Electric vehicles are heavier, require specific handling, have battery charge requirements, and sit in an insurance gray zone that most carriers haven't fully addressed. If you're shipping a Tesla, Rivian, Chevy Bolt, or any other EV, here's what's different and where the hidden costs and risks are.
Weight surcharges are real and sometimes hidden
EVs are significantly heavier than comparable gas vehicles due to battery packs. A Tesla Model 3 weighs about 4,000 lbs. A Rivian R1T weighs up to 7,100 lbs. Standard auto transport carriers calculate their loads by weight — a heavy EV means one fewer car on the trailer and less carrier revenue.
Many carriers charge a surcharge for EVs, typically $100–$300 above the standard rate. Brokers who don't disclose this upfront will either lose the carrier assignment or call you after booking to request more money. Ask explicitly: "Is there an EV surcharge, and is it included in this quote?"
Battery charge requirements
Most carriers require EVs to be loaded with a battery charge between 15–50%. Why:
- Too low: The vehicle may need to be driven or rolled onto the trailer — a dead battery means it must be winched, which costs extra and risks undercarriage damage
- Too high: Lithium-ion batteries at or near 100% charge generate more heat, which is a fire risk during long-haul transport in hot conditions
Confirm the carrier's specific charge requirement before pickup day. Different carriers have different policies. Arriving with a 5% charge when they want 25% can delay or cancel your pickup with no refund on your deposit.
Autopilot and driver-assist systems
Some EV owners have reported that carrier drivers accidentally triggered autopilot or driver-assist features while loading or unloading the vehicle. Before pickup, check if your vehicle has a "transport mode" or "service mode" (Tesla does) that disables these systems, enables towing, and sometimes raises ride height. Activate it before the driver arrives.
For Tesla specifically: Transport Mode is in Controls → Service → Transport Mode. Activating it prevents unexpected acceleration and enables the vehicle to be moved without the key present.
Enclosed transport is worth it for EVs
Standard open transport exposes your vehicle to road debris, weather, and UV. For EVs with large, exposed battery undercarriages — particularly vehicles with skateboard-style battery packs — a rock chip from an open trailer can damage the battery housing. Enclosed transport costs $200–$600 more but eliminates debris exposure and provides better documentation of pre- and post-transport condition.
The insurance gap on EV batteries
This is the biggest risk most EV owners don't know about. Standard cargo insurance covers "physical damage" during transport. But if your EV arrives with what appears to be a battery management system issue — reduced range, a cell fault code, or degraded charge capacity — proving that the transport caused it is nearly impossible.
Battery damage from vibration, temperature extremes, or improper handling shows up as software faults, not visible physical damage. Most carriers will deny these claims because there's no external evidence of impact. Your personal auto insurance may not cover it either, since the car was in transit and under carrier custody.
Before shipping: document your battery health percentage, range at 100% charge, and any existing fault codes. Pull a full diagnostics report. This is your baseline for any post-transport claim.

- "Is the EV surcharge included in this quote or billed separately?"
- "What battery charge level do you require at pickup?"
- "Does your carrier's insurance cover battery system damage or only physical body damage?"
- "Can you provide an enclosed carrier for this shipment?"
Before pickup day checklist
- Charge battery to carrier's specified level (typically 20–40%)
- Activate transport/service mode if available
- Document battery health, range, and fault codes with screenshots
- Photograph all panels, undercarriage, and charging port
- Remove any home charging cables or adapters from the vehicle
- Disable scheduled charging to prevent the car from seeking a charge during transport
- Note odometer reading
