Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) Vehicle Shipping: How Ocean Loading Works
Understand RoRo ocean shipping for vehicles, including eligibility, port handoffs, preparation rules, and when a container is better.
RoRo vessels use internal ramps and decks so eligible vehicles can be driven or rolled aboard. This can simplify ocean loading, but it also places the shipment inside a port and vessel process with strict preparation rules.
Check eligibility before choosing the mode
Confirm that the vehicle’s dimensions, weight, running condition, fuel level, battery status, and ground clearance meet the sailing and terminal requirements. Boats and machinery may need a different deck, cradle, or shipping method.
Ask about sailing frequency, port pair, cut-off date, terminal charges, and whether inland delivery is included. A cheaper ocean leg can be offset by storage or a distant destination port.
Prepare for the terminal
Remove personal property, clean the vehicle enough for inspection, secure loose parts, and provide the required keys and documents. Photograph the exterior and interior before the port handoff.
The port is not a normal residential pickup. Follow its rules for access, appointments, hazardous materials, alarms, and fuel; your domestic driver cannot waive them.
Compare RoRo with a container
RoRo can be efficient for standard running vehicles. A container may provide more control for high-value parts, non-running vehicles, or consolidated cargo, but it introduces loading, blocking, lashing, and container-size constraints.
