Shipping an Exotic Car: Climate Control, Security, and Clearances
What to require when transporting an exotic or high-value vehicle, including enclosed equipment, climate concerns, access control, and records.
Exotic vehicles often have low ground clearance, unusual tie-down points, complex electronics, and values that make ordinary documentation inadequate. The transport plan should be customized before the carrier is dispatched.
Ask about equipment and access
Confirm hard-side enclosed equipment, ramp angle, lift-gate availability, interior height, wheel restraint, and whether the vehicle travels alone or with other cargo. A transporter should have a plan for active suspension, front-lift systems, and wide or carbon-fiber wheels.
Security includes controlled access, key handling, parking practices, and a written handoff record. “Enclosed” does not automatically mean unattended storage or climate control.
Clarify value and insurance
Ask whether coverage is actual cash value, stated value, or agreed value, what exclusions apply, and whether modifications or installed options are included. Request a certificate or policy summary through the proper business channel before pickup.
Your own collector policy may have notification requirements. Do not assume a broker’s general cargo statement replaces the carrier’s insurance terms.
Create a condition record
Use high-resolution photos, a written option list, odometer reading, and an appraisal or restoration file where relevant. Walk around the vehicle with the driver and make the bill of lading specific before loading.
