Shipping Salvage-Titled or Financed Vehicles: Titles, Liens, and Insurance
What to resolve before transporting a salvage-title vehicle or a vehicle with a lender, including paperwork, access, and coverage questions.
Salvage, rebuilt, financed, and estate vehicles often have extra paperwork and unusual condition. Solve authorization, loading, and insurance questions before a carrier arrives.
Resolve authority and title records
Keep the title or registration, lienholder information, release or authorization, purchase records, and identification consistent. A carrier should not be asked to decide who may take possession of a disputed vehicle.
Describe the damage honestly
State whether the vehicle rolls, steers, brakes, has missing wheels, has body parts that can shift, or needs a winch, forklift, or flatbed. Photograph the damage and loading points.
Check the insurance path
Ask how cargo coverage treats a pre-damaged, salvage, or rebuilt vehicle and how a new loss would be measured. Keep the pre-transport condition record detailed enough to distinguish old damage from new damage.
