Vehicle Mechanical Preparation Before Shipping: Fluids, Tires, Battery, and Alarms
A practical pre-shipment maintenance checklist covering fluid leaks, tire pressure, batteries, alarms, and safe operating condition.
Preparation is about safe handling, not a full service appointment. The vehicle needs to be stable, leak-free, and honestly described so the carrier can load and secure it without surprises.
Check for leaks and weak components
Inspect engine, transmission, coolant, brake, fuel, power-steering, hydraulic, and battery areas. A leak can damage other cargo and may require a pan, special loading, or a different trailer.
Repair loose body panels, fragile spoilers, exposed glass, and weak tie-down points before pickup.
Set tires and battery for transport
Use the manufacturer’s cold tire pressure unless the carrier gives a specific written instruction. Over- or under-inflation can affect loading and securement. Make sure the battery is secured and terminals are protected from accidental contact.
Record the odometer, warning lights, fuel level, and operating condition during the pickup inspection.
Control alarms and loose accessories
Disable an alarm only according to the owner’s manual or carrier plan. Remove toll tags, garage remotes, valuables, and loose items; personal property is commonly excluded from cargo coverage.
